Turning Pages and Building Community: Celebrating Local and Regional Authors

Here in Bowling Green, we’re a community that values stories. From our rich history to the everyday tales we share with our families, narratives weave their way through the fabric of our lives. That's why I'm excited to shine a spotlight on the talented local authors who call this region home.

As a family law attorney, I understand the power of stories to shape our understanding of the world. And as a resident of Bowling Green, I know the importance of supporting our local talent.

There's something truly special about discovering a book written by someone in your own community. It creates a connection, a sense of shared experience, and a deeper appreciation for the creative spirit that thrives right here in our backyard.

For the Young Readers:

Instilling a love of reading in children is one of the greatest gifts we can give. Thankfully, we have local authors who are crafting captivating stories for young minds.

Among those are Cameron Levis (Home is Where Your Park Is) and Allison Bemis (God Made Me from A to Z, 26 Activity Devotions).  When looking for other books, consider those from local childhood and middle-grade authors who capture the magic of childhood or create exciting adventures for the young mind.

For the Teens and Young Adults:

Finding books that resonate with teenagers can be a challenge. But local authors are rising to the occasion, crafting stories that tackle relevant themes and engage young minds.

Local authors focusing on YA content include M Hendrix (The Chaperone) and Court Stevens (Last Girl Breathing).  To find other books in the genre, look for those exploring themes of identity, friendship, and coming-of-age, and if you can find one with Kentucky settings or familiar historical events these can add a layer of relevance that makes the reading experience more engaging.

For the Adults:

Whether you enjoy fiction, non-fiction, or poetry, you're sure to find something to pique your interest among our local authors.  David Bell (Storm Warning) is a prolific novelist with more than a dozen titles to his credit. Other area/regional authors include non-fiction writers delving into fascinating topics, including those tied to Western Kentucky University or Bowling Green’s unique history. You’re even likely to find accomplished poets among writers in this area and region.

Supporting Our Local Literary Community:

There are many ways to support our local authors and foster a love of reading in our community:

  • Visit Local Libraries: Bowling Green and Warren County are fortunate to have several robust library facilities, serving nearly every community in the county. Their shelves are stocked with hidden gems by local authors.
  • Try Out the Awesome Used Book Store: There’s a hidden gem of a used bookstore right inside the Capitol Arts Center on Fountain Square in Bowling Green. It helps support the Friends of the Library, a nonprofit that supports libraries, meaning your purchase helps support the local literacy community.
  • Attend Author Events: Keep an eye out for book signings, readings, and other author events in the area. These events provide an opportunity to meet local authors and learn more about their work.
  • Join a Book Club: Consider joining a local book club that focuses on local authors or regional literature.
  • Spread the Word: Share your favorite local authors and books with friends, family, and colleagues.

By celebrating our local authors, we not only support their creative endeavors but also enrich our community with the power of storytelling. So, pick up a book, turn the pages, and discover the literary treasures that await you right here in Bowling Green
